Team Participation/Affiliation

Last Revised on September 25, 2018

“Affiliation” is the assignment of a child to the appropriate parish/school after determining that the child meets one of the following criteria:

• The child has been an active member of the parish for a minimum of 60 days;

• The parent/legal guardian of the child has been an active member of the parish for a minimum of 60 days; or

• The child attends the parish religious education program or the child attends the parish school.

In the event a child does not meet any of those criteria, the CYM Office will determine the child’s affiliation.

In general, the CYM Office will look to a child’s residence in relation to parish boundaries in order to determine primary affiliation.  However, the CYM Office will also consider the parish(es) with the greatest need in a particular sport, and reserves the right to determine the affiliation based primarily on this issue, after giving due consideration to any hardships it may place on a child.

If a child’s primary affiliation does not have a sport that the child wises to participate in, the parent guardian may request a secondary affiliation for that sport only. Assignment of a Secondary Affiliation will be at the discretion of CYM staff.

Parish or school guidelines as to types of affiliations that will be accepted are permitted to be stricter than CYM rules, but not less strict. CYM rules are the minimum standards and may, in some cases, be extended by a parish or school (e.g., a parish or school may restrict the number of teams in a particular sport or may choose to restrict participation to its own members).

In addition to participation/affiliation rules, there are additional rules for eligibility; for example, age, grade, playing for a high school team, or other restrictions contained elsewhere within this Handbook. Sport-specific rules also detail eligibility requirements, especially for individual and team eligibility for playoffs and championships.

There are times when a child may initially be eligible to participate for more than one parish or school.  For example, he or she is an active parish member in one parish and attends the school of another parish.  In such cases, the parish or school to which the child is assigned will be the child’s permanent primary affiliation.

Private Catholic Schools - In the case of private Catholic schools, (i.e., Mt. Aviat Academy, Nativity Prep, Serviam Academy, St. Edmond’s Academy, and Ursuline Academy) only children that attend that school may participate for that school’s team.

It is the responsibility of a parent/guardian of a child wishing to play CYM sports to register said child at the parish/school by the deadline set by that parish/school. CYM will not consider requests for changes in affiliation if a parish/school deadline has not been met. 2225

Once an individual is properly affiliated with a team in a particular parish/school program, and participates in any team activity(ies) with the team, that individual has established permanent affiliation with that program and must participate with that parish/school in all sports for the duration of his or her eligibility. 2226
